Co-location storage: Current challenges and opportunities

26 February 2026

On 19 February 2026, we hosted the event ‘Current Affairs and Grid Expectations’ at our law firm’s offices. We were delighted by the high level of interest and the diverse range of participants.

The event offered insights from both a practical and legal perspective:

Jonathan Reuther spoke about co-location storage and the overbuilding of grid connections.

Lennard Wilkening from suena, as an external guest, provided current insights into the marketing opportunities for storage from a practical perspective.

Tim Stahlberg explained the legal options for marketing battery storage facilities.

In the subsequent discussion, the following topics, among others, were discussed from the perspective of banks, project developers, asset managers, investors and consultants:

  • Conversion of green electricity storage facilities to grey electricity storage facilities: opportunities, risks and requirements for preliminary planning.
  • Preparation and implementation of mixed storage facilities (green electricity + grey electricity): timelines and added value.
  • Overbuilding existing grid connections: optimised grid connection utilisation and leveraging economic potential.
  • Operational management: advantages of joint marketing of generation plants and storage facilities.
  • Marketing agreements: protection against legal changes, especially in revenue definitions and other changes in law.
  • Bankability of storage marketing: key points from a financing perspective.
